OMRDD is now on the path of helping people with disabilities to live richer lives. Lives not dictated by the system, but lives instead that are enriched.
With this new direction there will be a shared accountability and responsibility amongst all stake holders, including person's with disabilities, their families, and the public and private sector.
Both OMRDD and providers will now be held to a high degree of accountability as these responsibilities are carried out. We will all strive together to provide a life of quality for people with disabilities, their families and the public, that is economically feasible and in tuned with what a person really needs.
The move towards more person responsive lives is one in which our field is moving. In the past, we have had structured programs that were offered for support. Today, the move is to take responsible steps in helping people with disabilities to design a lifestyle that leads to greater self satisfaction and personal enrichment. This should not be pie in the sky or unrealistic in any way. This should not be less safe with less responsibility on behalf of a provider. This is about a change in mindset and a change in service delivery.
People with disabilities aspire to have normal lives, a normal home, friends, neighbors, jobs, family ties and community lifestyles. Many people have only been offered serv ices that are agency based and not personally driven.
This workshop will broaden the experience of those in: NYSACRA's Learning Institute, will deepen the understanding of what is possible based on NYSARC's Autism workshops and will help others realize what can occur. These two days will deepen the understanding of OMRDD's new mission—"Putting People First" and will stretch your minds as you venture down the new path of what is possible.
This will be the first of a set of two conferences. This conference will set the tone for what is possible. The following conference in the spring will be a time where we will actually plan for people you are working with. We will have facilitators present and will work with each team to come up with a realistic, self fulfilling and economically feasible plan with adequate safeguards.
These two days will deepen the understanding of OMRDD's new mission—"Putting People First" and will stretch your minds as you venture down the new path of what is possible.
Please come join us, Beth Mount, Commissioner Ritter and Max Chmura (and/or their representatives) and John Gleason from the CNYDSO.
Please pass this flyer and email onto to others.
Register Early!
The conference is limited to the first 40 participants
